Unmask Me is a performance piece inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin, the theme of the body and the medieval text and music of Hildegard Von Bingen. By using a Gregorian Chant that transgresses in to expressive singing and improvisation I wanted to expose the desire that is rich in sacred vocal music and juxtapose the traditional technique of singing with more expressive and experimental techniques.
My research of Mikhail Bakhtin's Rabelais and His World has influenced much of my work.
This study of Medieval culture and literature explores ideas of the body transgressing limitations, the regenerative power of the body and the subversion of the psychological to the bodily.
My interest in the body as a compositional element started to expand and became a recurring concept that inspired my work in many different ways; on a conceptual level expressing what the body may represent (desires, identity, reality) and in a more explicit way by directly referencing the use of the body in the work. Unmask me is an example of how I explore these themes conceptually.
