Breath can alter our physical state and our mentality in the most powerful ways. Modes of breath can represent our most tense, anxious moments as well as the more pleasurable and releasing. Inextricably connected with the body, breath is consciously and unconsciously utilised in every aspect of our life.
Classical singing requires a control over the breath, this bodily function becomes something to be used in order to support the voice. But what if we explored how the breath itself can generate different emotions and sounds? What if brought the breath in to the musical realm. Exploiting its emotive, performative and sonic potential instead of it just being a carrier for the voice.
Breathing is a vocal transcription of the String Quartet with the same title
Through graphic scores three vocalists explore the breath through sections; Calm, Tense, Pleasure and Release.
